My Favorite Coming-of-Age Movies

My Favorite Coming-of-Age Movies

In my 23 Things You Didn’t know About me post, I mentioned that I am a massive cinephile. I will watch every and any movie regardless of genre. However, my all time favorite genre has to be Coming-Of-Age. Below I will list some of my favorite Coming-Of-Age films. Their trailers will also be linked.

  • Almost Famous- based on director Cameron Crowe’s own experiences as a teen rock journalist, “Almost famous” centers around 15 year old William Miller (played by Patrick Fugit), a sort of child prodigy whose writing impresses Rolling Stone. He is sent by Rolling Stone to tour with and write a story about fictional band Stillwater. William, who has an incredibly overbearing and overprotective mother (Frances McDormand) is thrust into a world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

  • The Diary of a Teenage Girl -In 1976 San Fransisco, Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is a 15 year old girl living with her single mother (Kristen Wiig) and sister. She aspires to be cartoonist and to lose her virginity. Minnie’s life is turned upside down when she starts sleeping with her mothers boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard).

  • Copenhagen -William (Game Of Throne’s Gethin Anthony) is an immature American who goes to Copenhagen to uncover some of his family history. It is there where he meets Effy, a danish girl who offers to help him. The two roam around Copenhagen and fall for each other. The problem? Effy is only 14 years old.

  • Mid 90’s- In his directorial debut, Jonah hill’s Mid 90’s focuses on 13 year old Stevie and his older friends he meets at a skate shop. Together, they skate the streets of Los Angeles to get away from their troubled lives at home.

  • Moonrise Kingdom-In 1965 on an island off the coast of New England, Suzy and Sam are two kids who are wise beyond their years. They fall in love and decide to runaway together, setting up camp at a cove they call “Moonrise Kingdom” . Suzy’s parents, along with Sam’s Boy Scout troop are desperate to find the 12-year-old lovebirds.

These are some of the best Coming-Of-Age films I’ve watched. I have several more I recommend and will probably talk about in another post. Have ya’ll seen any of these films or have any recommendations for me? Let me know on Instagram! FYI, although these movies are not available on Netflix at the moment, most of them are on Youtube to rent for less than $3!
