Hi!

The Leslie Life is a blog dedicated to living in Los Angeles and travel. Enjoy!

My Day in Downtown LA

My Day in Downtown LA

The thing about Downtown LA is that you either love it or hate it. Personally, I hate it most of the time but sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and go. Recently, my friend Jesse, his dog Mochi, and I decided to have a day in DTLA. Here’s what we did!

Listen y’all, the food at Grand Central Market is good but the environment in there is HECTIC. I was fighting for my life every second I was in there. I decided to make the best of the situation and chose to try my first ever pupusa for lunch.

Saritas Pupuseria had a long line (as seen above) and I was told my food was going to take 30 minutes. That’s how I knew it was going to be good. All told, I found it to be very affordable. You can easily spend $20-$30 on a meal at Grand Central.

A carne asada pupusa, a coke, and fried plantains cost me less than $13. It was, as expected, pretty fire. This is a no-frills type of eatery and the guy who took my order practically yelled at me for not speaking loud enough. However, it was worth it.

  • A trip to Elysian Park

In my 25 years of living in Los Angeles, I had never been to Elysian Park until now. According to the Echo Park Historical Society, this is the oldest park in LA! This park is huge; It just went on and on. Jesse drove around the hills and we stopped to walk Mochi and explore.

Eventually, we got to this viewpoint called “Angels Point” (plug into Google Maps and it will come up). You can see the skyline of Downtown and Dodgers Stadium. We sat on the grass and chatted a bit before we headed to our last destination.

  • A walk through Angelino Heights

In case you’ve been living under a rock or simply don’t know me, I love architecture, old houses, and old things. That’s why I urged Jesse to drive us to Angelino Heights. Located only 10 minutes away from Elysian Park, this is LA’s oldest neighborhood.

I love Angelino Heights, more specifically, Caroll Avenue, because of the several well-preserved Victorian houses the neighborhood has. The one above is called the “Thriller House” (it was in the Michael Jackson music video). These houses date back to the late 1800s, an astonishing feat for Los Angeles!

If you’re looking to visit this gorgeous historical neighborhood, the address of the “Thiller House” is 1345 Carroll Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90026. Street parking is widely available and free. This is a quiet area and people do live in these magnificent houses so please be respectful if you visit.

That’s it for me guys! Thank you for reading and make sure to check out my TikTok below to see more of my day in Downtown LA!
