My Trip to Oklahoma City

My Trip to Oklahoma City

Hey Y’all, I’m back! Where have I been you might ask? Well, if you read the title, then you know it’s Oklahoma City. I spent six days there and I’m here to tell you all about it.

Read on below to learn more about what it was like to fly during a pandemic and how Oklahoma City is different from Los Angeles!

  • Why Oklahoma City?

If you have read some of my posts or know me personally, then you might know that my boyfriend moved from LA to OKC in January for work. I was supposed to visit in March however, COVID happened and I moved my flight to April foolishly thinking that things would be better.

But April came, and my flight to OKC was completely canceled by American Airlines. I wasn’t able to see my boyfriend until June when he finally flew home for a short visit. This prompted me to attempt to visit and in July, I booked a flight for early September.

  • What was it like to fly during a pandemic?

Admittedly, I was very nervous to fly. Once I booked my ticket, I decided to purchase a few things to make me feel better about it. Besides a face mask, I decided to get a face shield, and a hazmat suit. Yes, that is right, I am one of those people. I didn’t care about getting weird looks, in fact, I thought it was kinda cute. You can see it below. Pardon my looks, It was a very early flight.

As for the actual flight, things went pretty smoothly. I flew Delta and they are social distancing on planes. First I flew from LA to Salt Lake City and then from Salt Lake City to OKC.

On each flight, to and from OKC, I sat by myself, or the middle seat was left empty. Of course, I rather sit by myself but that’s better than nothing. As I entered the plane, they gave me a sanitizing wipe. Before I sat down, I made sure to wipe down my seat, armrests, table, and window. Overall, I felt pretty secure and although I don’t want to fly again anytime soon, the thought doesn’t overwhelm me anymore.

Besides the flight, security at the airport was quick and seating at the gate was limited to promote social distancing. I did get some weird looks and glances but I took it in stride.

  • What did I do in Oklahoma City?

I want to make it clear that this was NOT a vacation and I did not go out much. Both my boyfriend and I work remotely and this week was no different. When we did go out, it was to get food or to go on drives.

In general, OKC is not a touristy place. It feels like a small town even though it’s a big city. The one touristy thing I did was visit the Myriad Botanical Gardens (pictured below).

The Myriad Botanical Gardens is essentially a large tropical greenhouse. It was hot, humid, and very green. It was very different from any botanical garden I’ve been to. It’s a nice oasis smack dab in the city. It was also only $8 so if you are ever in OKC, make sure to check it out!

I will say that OKC has some very good (but not healthy) food. I had one of the best burgers of my life at a place called Nic’s Grill. This place is a hole in the wall but is apparently Colin Farrell’s favorite burger and now I know why.

Besides Nic’s, I went to a fast-food restaurant called Braums. Sadly, Braums is only based in Oklahoma so I had to get my fill and I went a few times throughout my stay.

My favorite thing I did in Oklahoma was driving to the country. It’s VERY different from anywhere in LA. It’s kind of like a time capsule. It seems like these places haven’t changed in decades.

Everything in the country is falling apart or abandoned-an aesthetic that I personally love. It was quite scenic and relaxing.

Even though there wasn’t much to see or do in OKC, it was nice to get out of the house. I hadn’t been out of California since last year when I went to New Orleans. It felt good to be bored and work somewhere else instead of my own room. I find OKC and Oklahoma, in general, to be charming and both have a lot of potential.
