Nature Calls: The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve
Welcome friends!
As we go into our second year of the pandemic, I wanted to share another COVID-friendly activity with you all. In light of recent news and nearly everyone I know getting sick, I’ve been reverting back to 2020 behavior.
In other words, I’ve been staying the f*** home and focusing on outdoor-centered activities. Last week, for example, I visited the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills.
This week, I headed to Huntington Beach for a walk at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.
What is this place you might ask? It’s a 1,400-acre coastal habitat that includes wetlands, marshes, and dunes. Above it are paths and bridges for people to walk on. You can actually find Bolsa Chica State Beach directly across from the reserve.
If you haven’t been before, I would describe it as a large swampy park. Keep in mind, however, that there’s no grass or anywhere to sit. If you, like me, love walking, this is is the place for you!
I ended up walking 4 miles with my friend Alma and we barely even touched the surface. This place is massive and largely flat. In other words, don’t expect a hike, just a long walk!
Although you can’t tell from the photos above, there were actually quite a bit of people around. Many actually go to birdwatch, Apparently, this place is a big deal if you are into that sort of thing. This particular trail led into a picture-perfect neighborhood that was Orange County AF.
This was my first time here and I really enjoyed it! It was raining and gloomy, just how I like it. There’s plenty to see (animals, water, plant life) and it feels removed from the rest of the city. The best part? It’s absolutely free! If you’re looking to take a long marshy walk, make sure to visit 🙂.
