My Top 5 Purchases of 2023
Hello and happy New Year, everyone!
While I could write a sappy and inspirational post about 2023, I decided against doing that. Instead, I will briefly tell you what I spent my money on this year.
Yes, the rumors are true; I'm addicted to capitalism! So, without further ado, let's get into my top 5 purchases of 2023.
Like any writer, I love buying and collecting books. Years ago, I swore that I would never purchase an E-Reader. That would be a betrayal, and honestly, I considered E-Readers gauche.
Well, the joke is on me because, in 2023, I purchased a Kindle. You see, reality set in. Books are expensive, and I ran out of storage space (I live in my childhood bedroom).
That said, the Kindle has changed my life for the better. I can read comfortably for hours and check out free eBooks using my Los Angeles Public Library E-Card. The Kindle truly has revolutionized the way I read, and I encourage any avid reader to purchase one.
Crocs are another item I swore I would never purchase. Let’s be real; Crocs are ugly, there’s no doubt about that. During the summer of 2023, I was on the hunt for the perfect beach shoes. After hearing my friend Ash rave about her Crocs, I bit the bullet and bought a pair.
Unfortunately, they are the comfiest shoes I have ever owned. I can wear them rain or shine, at home, or on Costco runs. IMO, Crocs are that b****, and my only regret is that I didn’t buy a pair sooner.
If you have trouble falling asleep, I beg you to buy Dr. Teal’s Sleep Spray. It’s under $10, and it smells fabulous. I spray it on my blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Like a Pavlovian dog, I ease into sleepy mode after hearing the “spritz spritz” of the bottle. In fact, I brought this with me on my trip to Europe to help with jet lag.
A few years ago, my mom somehow came into possession of a shopper bag from Harrods. It was probably from a garage sale, but my mom assumed I had given it to her.
Either way, my mom had no idea that Harrods, located in London, is one of the most luxurious department stores in the world.
To make a long story short, my mom wore this bag on an outing, and when an acquaintance asked if she had gone to Harrods, my mother said, “No, my daughter gave me this bag.”
The acquaintance said she didn’t realize I had gone to London (I hadn’t), and by that point, my mom was confused and went along with the story.
My mom came home that night and said she had accidentally embroiled me in a lie, and we howled in laughter.
I decided then and there to go to Harrods one day and buy my mom and myself a bag.
In early October 2023, I made it to London, dragging my best friend Claude Dana, who swore he would never go to London, with me. Much to his chagrin, I spent hours in Harrods, choosing the perfect bag for my mom and me. Of course, mine (pictured above) is pink and was under $40. It’s a souvenir I’ll never forget.
