My Top 5 Blog Writing Tips

Hey there! Are you looking into starting a blog or simply learning some new writing tips? Then you’ve come to the right place!

I launched my blog a little over a year and a half ago. I also work as a copywriter for a living so it’s safe to say that I do a lot of writing.

Regardless, I don’t consider myself a great writer. I do, however, consider myself as someone who knows how to communicate and get a message through quickly and concisely.

So today, I’ll be sharing with you all my own personal Top 5 blog writing tips! Let’s get into it!

  1. Use Common Terminology

If you have a blog or post any type of writing online, I’m assuming this means you want people to read it right? That’s why I think it’s best to refrain from “big words” or jargon. People don’t like feeling dumb or like they can’t understand something. You want people to be able to read your writing and grasp whatever you wrote write away. If you don’t, they’ll stop reading and move on.

2. Use Bullet Points

Have you ever clicked on something you wanted to read only for it to load into a giant blob of words? Yeah, it’s not pretty and I’m going to guess you most likely exit out of the tab without a second glance. That’s why you should use bullet points! You can separate different paragraphs/themes to make it 100% easier to read. I know you can’t always use bullet points of course but whenever you can, I say go for it.

3. Keep it Short

This can be easier said than done. Writers love to overly explain everything and I get it. You have to always put yourself in the shoes of a reader though. People aren’t patient and they want instant gratification. So give the people what they want! Keep you’re writing short and simple. If you do, they most likely will stay or come back to read another post.

4. Get To the Point

This is a continuation of what I said above. To keep it short, you have to get the point pretty early on. Throughout grade school ( & perhaps even college), you’re taught to go in-depth and in detail about everything. This works for academic writing but not necessarily for blog or article writing. This does not mean to leave out any important information, however; it simply means that less is more.

5. Have Fun

If you have your own blog or can pitch ideas then you have the luxury of being able to choose what you want to write about. This is big, so take advantage of it! Think of things you would want to share with people and compile a list. Some days you won’t feel like writing and that’s ok; pick something off your list you think might be less daunting to write about. You have to enjoy the process. If not, it will reflect in your writing.

If you’re thinking about starting a blog or putting some writing out there, I hope these tips can give you some insight. Of course, please take these with a grain of salt! Everyone has their own writing style and this is mine. It’s important to keep in mind that I am coming from a journalistic point of a view, not an English or literature one. So these tips probably won’t be useful for essays and whatnot.

Thank you for reading and if you want more blog tips, let me know! See you all next time.

XOXO
