Is Kylie Cosmetics Worth It?
Back in 2017, when Kylie Cosmetics was still fairly new, I decided to purchase the Mary Jo K Lip Kit . At the time, and to this day, I find $30 to be a ridiculous amount of money for a liquid lipstick. But, my curiosity got the best of me and so, I gave in and bought it.
I’m sad to say that it’s one of my most disappointing makeup purchases ever. The color did not stay put and it flaked and dried out my lips. I gave it to my mom, thinking perhaps she might have a better experience, but I was wrong. She too experienced the same problem and there went my $30. I vowed to never buy anything from Kylie Cosmetics again! That was until Ulta began to exclusively sell Kylie Cosmetics in their stores.
On my various trips to Ulta, I would go to the Kylie Cosmetics display and swatch the blushes and kylighter and was impressed by the quality…but not the prices. However, since Black Friday, Ulta has had various sales on Kylie Cosmetics and I gave in once again, and purchased some products. Here are my thoughts on those products.
Blush:
I purchased “Baddie On The Block” for $10 (the regular price is $18) on Black Friday and love this color; I think it’s a universally flattering bright pink.
However, I do think you can get this quality blush at a drug store. Think Milani’s powder blush in “Coral Cove” or Essence’s Matt Touch Blush in “Peach Me Up”. I own both these products and not only are they a little more affordable, but are the same great quality.
I also purchased the Kylie Holiday Try It Kit for $29.40 (originally $49). It comes with a variety of products, including “We’re Going Shopping”, a blush that is described as a clean coral color online.
I find this blush to be both a peachy and burnt orange tone. It looks beautiful on the skin and the quality is great.
I don’t know a dupe for this specific color, so if you are interested in buying it, the kit itself, is a great deal (the blush alone is $18). I will talk about the rest of the kits product below.
Kylighter:
During Ulta’s Black Friday sale, I also purchased “Ice Me Out”, a champagne colored highlighter.
Originally $20, I got it for $10. Like the blushes, I find that is a beautiful and good quality brush but, it is definitely overpriced.
It is very similar to another highlighter I have, Colourpop Lite Stix in “Star Brite” ($8). This is a pretty simple color where you can find multiple dupes for it, there’s no reason to pay $20.
Eyeshadow:
The Kylie Holiday Try It Kit came with a small eyeshadow duo that has the shades “Quartz” and “Topaz” .
This duo is exclusive to the kit, however, you can buy each individual shadow for $7 each. I really like both these colors. They are for an everyday look and blend pretty good.
If you’re wondering, “Quartz” and “Topaz” come from the The Bronze Palette, which retails for $42 (yikes). I would not buy an eyeshadow single for $7 or this palette for $42, when I can buy an entire Colourpop palette for less than $20.
Lips:
The Kylie Holiday Try It Kit comes with a lip liner in the shade “Iced Latte” (retails for $12 individually), “Bare Velvet Lip” (originally in a lip kit for $27), and “Almost Friday”, (a matte lipstick that retails for $17.
Besides the kit, Ulta had a 2 for $20 sale on the lipsticks in early December and so, my friend Brigitte and I got the 2 lipsticks, and split the price. I bought “Boss” (originally $17), a red tone lipstick described as soft cherry, and Brigitte got “Madeleine”, (also $17) described as a warm strawberry tone.
I gave my mom the “Iced Latte” lip liner (it’s a brownish color) and the “Bare Velvet Lip” (a natural pink color). She loved the lip liner but again, found the liquid lipstick to be drying and crumbly. P.S. a similar shade for “Iced Latte” is this Morphe lip liner that retails for $4.
As for the matte lipsticks, I love both “Almost Friday” and “Boss”. They are beautiful colors but, I find them to be the same quality as Colourpop. In fact, a similar color to “Almost Friday” is “Hey Mr. Dj” from Colourpop and for “Boss” “Solo”, also from Colourpop (and both are $7.50).
Final Thoughts:
Do I think Kylie Cosmetics is worth it? No. The packaging is beautiful, as are the campaigns and photoshoots, however, I believe Kylie Cosmetics is overpriced.
Quality wise, for reasons stated above, the only thing I don’t recommend are the liquid lipsticks. I like the blushes, the lipsticks, the highlighter, and even the eyeshadow duo but, I do believe you can find dupes out there for the same quality and half the price.
If you are interested in trying out some Kylie Cosmetics products, purchase this kit. For $29, you get the Iced Latte Lip Liner, Bare Velvet Lip, eyeshadow duo in Quartz & Topaz, Almost Friday Lipstick, and We're Going Shopping Blush. Usually each product retails from $12-20 so, it’s a steal!
I don’t regret buying any of the products because I did not buy them full price. That being said, if you do want to try out Kylie Cosmetics and can wait, keep an eye out for sales that either Ulta or kylie Cosmetics has. There is really no reason to be paying full price for her products.
In the photo below, I am wearing “Almost Friday”on my lips, and the “We’re Going Shopping” blush.
