How to Get This Makeup Inspired Look From "The Love Witch"

How to Get This Makeup Inspired Look From "The Love Witch"

In a recent post, I mentioned “The Love Witch”. The 2016 film directed by Anna Biller, is about a beautiful young witch named Elaine whose obsession with love leads to murder.

What makes “The Love Witch” extraordinary is its visual beauty. Shot on 35mm film, the entire film is a technicolor dreamscape. Adding to this are Elaine’s various makeup looks and outfits that are inspired by the 1960s.

I decided to recreate her main look for fun using products I have at home. Most of the products I have are affordable, but for the ones that aren’t, I will make sure to provide a dupe.

I’ve done a similar look before however, Elaine’s makeup has a modern feel to it. It would be gorgeous for a night out (after quarantine is over of course!).

The look in question:

What you need:

Face:

  • As you can see, Elaine’s face is flawless and so, I decided to go with a very matte and full-coverage foundation and primer.

  • I used the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Face Primer ($5.99) and the Wet n Wild Photo Focus Foundation ($4.69) in soft beige.

  • Besides foundation, I used the Maybelline Fitme! Concealer ($5.39) in fair to cover my dark under-eye circles.

  • You can’t tell too well from the photo above, but Elaine wears heavily rouged peachy-pink cheeks. To achieve that, I used one of my all-time favorite makeup products, the Milani Rose Powder Blush ($6.99), in coral cove.

  • To finish off, I used a little of the Maybelline Fit Me Loose Powder ($5.39) in fair just to set everything and to blend the blush ever so slightly.

    Eyes/brows:

  • This look is all about the eyes! I started by priming my lids by with the AOA Perfect Eye Primer ($1). My eyebrows are already pretty dark and arched like Elaine’s, so I only used the e.l.f brow gel ($2) to make sure they stayed in place.

  • In the top photo where Elaine’s eyes are zoomed in, you can see that they are lined with a white eyeliner. This is very characteristic of 1960’s makeup and I actually do this every day to brighten my eyes. I use the Essence Extreme Lasting Eye Pencil ($2.99) in nude.

  • Now for the star of the show; blue eyeshadow! I used the shade castle (circled below) from the Little Briar Rose Storybook Palette (on sale for $35). I realize that this palette is expensive; I actually got it in a BOXYCHARM. But, fear not, I have a dupe for y’all; the L'Oréal Paris Infallible 24HR Shadow ($6.09) in infinite sky.

  • I don’t have a color similar to what Elaine has on in the photo and so, I got as close as I could within my makeup collection. The L'Oréal eyeshadow is definitely closer to what I’m wearing.

  • To finish off, I used a simple black eyeliner pen for my winged liner. Any will do, however, my favorite drugstore eyeliner pen is the NYX Epic Ink Liner ($9.00).

  • For mascara, I made sure to use something to give me lots of volume. The Rimmel ScandalEyes Retroglam Mascara ($5.59) is affordable and does a great job of volumizing lashes. I also lightly used it on my bottom lashes. You can also, of course, use fake eyelashes to achieve this look.

    Lips:

  • Elaine’s lips are a peachy-coral color (like her cheeks) but with a sheen to them.

  • I decided to use the L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lip ($5.99) in Matte-ly In Love, an orange-red shade. Once blotted, it fades into a coral color.

  • I added a lip gloss on top of it to give it a sheen look. You can use any lip gloss but the one I used is called coral crush by L.A. Colors and I got it at Dollar Tree.

Hair:

  • Elaine has straight thin black hair. I straightened my hair and clipped the back to make it look like my hair was thinner than it really is and voila; the look is complete!

Before you ask, yes, I am wearing a shirt!

I am not a makeup artist but I love sharing with you guys the products I use, especially products that are affordable! I think this look is fun and not as exaggerated as the classic 60’s look.

I hope you enjoyed this post and that you try this lookout! See you next week.

XOXO
